Noticing Super Mums with Kreative Klutz Founder Charley Hall

“You will never have this day with your children again. Tomorrow, they will be a little older than they were today. This day is a gift. Just breathe, NOTICE, study their faces and little feet. Pay attention. Relish the charms of the present. Enjoy today. It will be over before you know it.” -- Unknown

I am Charley Hall, a 13-year-old entrepreneur. Last year, in the midst of the Covid-19 lockdown, I taught myself to sew, and started a business called Kreative Klutz where I make and sell hair scrunchies. Several months ago while out shopping with my Mom, I came across a fabric with a black-and-white mum pattern, and immediately had the idea to create a scrunchie to NOTICE moms! I was so excited about this idea that I batch-sewed my entire fabric purchase that day, and the “Super Mum” scrunchie was born.

After discussing my idea for a Mother’s Day launch with my Mom, she suggested I make bundles, including a few additional items along with the Super Mum scrunchie.

I went back and forth on the idea and decided there was no one better to take Mother’s Day advice from than MY mother. My Mom and I bounced around a few ideas about items to include in the bundles, and decided to add lip balm, bath salts and flower seeds, and also to package it up in a way that was ready for gifting by customers who wanted to NOTICE the special women in their lives.

I announced the Super Mum bundles and scrunchies on April 16th and was overwhelmed with support right away. Within the first week, I had sold so many bundles, that I had to go back out to purchase more “extra” items. During the second week, I posted about the bundles (showing the packaging) on my business Instagram account, and a family friend ordered six bundles so she could spread kindness to some of her friends with children. That same week, another Mom who has small children reached out to order herself a Super Mum scrunchie. At my Mom’s suggestion, I wrote her children’s names on the packaging as a gift from them. After receiving her scrunchie in the mail, she highlighted Kreative Klutz in a social media post and commented on the special “note.”

In the time since Super Mum launched, I have released another scrunchie set (my first attempt at a “silky” fabric), and have purchased a Cricut cutting machine for my business. Next week is my one year business anniversary, and to celebrate, I am releasing stickers I have designed with the help of a few amazing friends. I am also bringing my business to Etsy.

I really enjoyed receiving all of the happy feedback from the Super Mum bundles, and love knowing I have been a small part of spreading joy in my community and helping my customers NOTICE so many special women. This experience has refueled my passion and I have so many lightbulbs switched on inside my head! I want everyone to know that there is a little love sewn into every stitch of my scrunchies, and it fills my bucket to know that something I made with my own two hands can put a smile on someone’s face -- and that we can see that smile better with her hair out of her face!
